Greg Rice, president and COO of HydroChem LLC, recently sat down with BIC Magazine to discuss HydroChem’s new off-site exchanger cleaning, inspection and repair facility in Beaumont, Texas, slated to open in September for the fall turnaround season.
Q: What led to the decision to open this facility?
A: The short answer is our customers. Turnarounds are one of the most challenging activities for our customers. Lack of real estate and tight timelines prove to be some of the biggest bottlenecks when planning and executing cleaning work. HydroChem is looking to alleviate these pressures with our automated off-site bundle cleaning facility. After a thorough review of the market, we saw a need for additional off-site capacity in the Gulf area that could reach from Corpus Christi, Texas, to Pascagoula, Mississippi. As an industry leader in the industrial cleaning business, we consider it a logical next step to offer these services and fill a void in the industry.
Q: Will the facility utilize HydroChem’s automated technology?
A: Since 2009, HydroChem has been one of the strongest proponents of automated hands-free hydroblasting. Safety is our No. 1 value and priority. Our facility will be no different. All exchangers will be cleaned using 100-percent automated hands-free technology. Our operators will work from a state-of-the-art control room utilizing computerized technologies. These processes will allow our operators to remain out of the line of fire while providing our customers with the safe and effective results they have come to expect from HydroChem.
Q: What types of services will you be offering?
A: HydroChem will offer its customers a complete turnkey service, including transportation to and from the customer facility, bundle cleaning using our state-of-the-art automated technology, and on-site inspection and repair with our partner, Metalforms. In addition, we will provide the disposal of all liquids and solids that is required by the state of Texas. HydroChem will provide facilities to allow our customers to bring in their own inspection teams to conduct Internal Rotary Inspection System and/or Eddy Current testing as required. Our cleaning facility will be located in the same complex as Metalform’s existing location in Beaumont.
Q: Why did HydroChem decide to partner with Metalforms?
A: We have known Metalforms for several years and wanted to bring together two industry leaders in their respective competencies. HydroChem has performed industrial cleaning services for the refining, petrochemical, power, paper and automotive industries since 1938. Metalforms Ltd. has been in the design, fabrication and repair of shell and tube heat exchangers since its founding in 1968. We believe this partnership presents our customers with the best possible combination of expertise in the industry.
Q: When will the facility be operational?
A: Our facility will be up and running by Sept. 1. The installation of equipment and final touches on the infrastructure are happening as we speak. We will be hosting an open house showcasing our facility the week of Aug. 15 and are excited to share our vision with our customers. HydroChem will deliver the same professionalism and attention to detail it currently provides to our on-site customers and proudly showcase that at the facility.
